What Is an Engagement Ring?

The history and meaning behind the single most loaded piece of jewelry.

An engagement ring is a promise object: given at a proposal, worn from acceptance, and — in most modern customs — worn daily thereafter, usually on the ring finger of the left hand.

Where the custom comes from

Ring exchanges at betrothal go back to Roman times, but the diamond engagement ring is specific: it dates to 1477, when Archduke Maximilian of Austria proposed to Mary of Burgundy with a ring set with thin, flat diamonds in the shape of an M. Aristocratic Europe copied it; the 20th century made it universal.

Why the fourth finger

The “vena amoris” belief — a vein running directly from that finger to the heart — is anatomically fiction, but the sentiment stuck across cultures. Left hand in most of the West; right hand in much of Germany, Russia and India.

What it means today

The form has loosened — plain bands, lab-grown stones, coloured gemstones and stackable sets are all common — but the function is unchanged. It is a public, wearable “yes”, and the only piece of jewellery most people will wear without interruption for years.
