Layered necklaces are the fastest way to make a plain neckline look considered — provided the chains stay apart and stay untangled.
The 5 cm rule
Each layer should sit roughly 5 cm below the one above it: 40 cm over 45 cm, or 40 + 45 + 50. Closer than 3 cm and the chains braid themselves together by lunchtime. Further than 7 cm and the eye reads them as separate necklaces rather than one composition.
Weight order
- Top layer: the finest chain, choker-length, bare or with a tiny stone.
- Middle layer: the pendant layer — this is where the eye lands, so put the piece with meaning here.
- Bottom layer: heavier chain, longer, plain. It grounds the set.
Anti-tangle habits
- One clasp ring per layer, clasps offset front and back.
- Attach pendants with a jump ring small enough that it cannot travel along the chain.
- Put the set on before dressing and check in a mirror after 10 minutes — early drift shows where the lengths need adjusting.
