Chain length decides where a necklace sits, and where it sits decides how it reads. The same pendant can disappear at the collarbone or anchor a whole outfit two centimetres lower.
Length guide
| Length | Sits | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 40 cm · 16″ | Base of the neck, like a collar | Chokers, short chains, open necklines |
| 45 cm · 18″ | Just below the collarbone | The everyday default — pendants, initials |
| 50 cm · 20″ | Above the chest line | Larger pendants, layering over 45 cm |
| 55–60 cm · 22–24″ | At or below the chest | Lariats, long drops, over knitwear |
Choosing by neckline
- Crew and high necks — longer chains (50 cm+) keep the metal from tangling with the collar.
- V-necks — a pendant that ends at the point of the V echoes the shape.
- Strapless and square — 45 cm sits exactly in the open band of skin.
Layering lengths
Chains layer best 5 cm apart: 45 + 50, or 40 + 45 + 50. Closer than that and they tangle; further apart and the middle band of skin breaks the line. Keep the shortest chain the finest and let each lower layer gain weight.
